Portuguese esports organisation LUNA Esports, formerly known as Diogo Jota Esports and LUNA Galaxy, has issued a heartfelt statement on the loss of its Founder Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva in a car accident.

In an official statement, the organisation expressed deep sorrow, describing the loss as “the most painful news we could ever have to share.” The message paid tribute to the two brothers, calling them “extraordinary friends and remarkable human beings.” Diogo Jota was also recognised as a “true ambassador for Esports, especially EA FC,” with his brother André described as someone who “was both admired and an admirer.”

The tragic accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, 3 July, in the Spanish province of Zamora. Diogo Jota, aged 28, was a professional footballer for Liverpool FC and the Portuguese national team. His 25-year-old brother, André Silva, was a footballer for Portuguese club Penafiel. According to local police sources, the brothers were en route to England, where Diogo Jota was set to begin pre-season preparations with Liverpool.

During his time with Liverpool, Jota won the 2024/25 Premier League title, the first of his career. Internationally he won the UEFA Nations League twice, most recently in June 2025.

Jota had recently married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, on 22 June. The couple had three children, aged four years, two years, and seven months.

LUNA Esports concluded its statement with a heartfelt farewell: “May peace rest upon your souls, and may you watch over us from above. Thank you, Diogo and André. Rest in peace.”

The organisation is known for its good results in the Portuguese EA FC scene, being champions of the 2024 FPF Taça Masters and reaching the finals of the 2025 edition.
