Amateur esports platform PlayVS has announced the launch of a new pilot initiative, Game On: An NHL/NHLPA Scholastic Gaming Initiative, aimed at promoting youth engagement through hockey-themed competitive gaming. The program is being introduced in National Hockey League (NHL) markets, and includes a national, virtual tournament set for mid-June in the United States.

Funded by the NHL/NHLPA Industry Growth Fund (IGF), the initiative offers a no-cost, structured competitive gaming program for players aged 13 to 21. The effort combines gameplay on the PlayVS platform with local NHL club involvement – including the New Jersey Devils, Los Angeles Kings, and Detroit Red Wings – and aims to foster access, inclusion, and connection within the gaming and hockey communities.

Activations include in-person events and student experiences hosted by participating NHL franchises. The first such event was held on March 20, during the New Jersey Devils’ Gaming Group Theme Night, where 40 students and coaches played EA Sports NHL 25 at Prudential Center.

The pilot will culminate in a virtual national tournament from June 13–15. U.S.-based players will compete for recognition while connecting with peers across the country. Registration for the event opens in mid-May through PlayVS’ Stadium platform.

In a press release, PlayVS CEO Jon Chapman emphasized the broader goals of the program, stating that “through this partnership with the NHL/NHLPA’s Industry Growth Fund, we’re not only creating new opportunities for players to engage with their favorite sport, but also helping them develop critical life skills through healthy competition.”

The initiative represents the initial phase of a larger effort by PlayVS to expand esports access across North America. The company aims to further integrate competitive gaming into the educational experience while offering new pathways for academic and social development.

The NHL/NHLPA Industry Growth Fund, established in 2013, has committed over $200 million to fan development and youth hockey programs across North America. This latest initiative reflects its continued investment in building hockey awareness through diverse engagement platforms.
