British Esports has expanded its venue project in Sunderland, United Kingdom, to include a new entertainment and esports venue called the British Arena. The news came along with first-look images of what the building will look like when completed.
The 15,000 sq.ft space, which was first announced last summer under the name Gaming and Esports Arena, is currently under construction and is planned to open in summer 2026. The venue is designed to host a wide variety of events.
The venue is backed by British Esports, the UK’s national esports federation. The organisation has worked closely with Sunderland City Council in recent years to support digital skills and job opportunities in the region.
According to the official release, the arena will be located in Sunniside, opposite the Stadium of Light, and will sit next to the National Esports Performance Campus and The Place accommodation. The area is part of the wider Sheepfolds redevelopment, which falls under the Riverside Sunderland project.
These include live music shows, comedy nights, esports activity including training matches for teams preparing for major tournaments like the Esports World Cup and Esports Nations Cup, sports events, conferences, broadcasts and private functions. British Esports has also mentioned that this new arena will host the finals of the International Defence Esports Games between October 9 and 11, 2026.
Dave Martin, Senior Vice President of British Esports, said, “There’s been a real rise in excitement as the British Arena takes shape and the world can see its development is underway. We’ve been meeting all kinds of people and businesses who want to get involved and we’re hugely optimistic about the potential of this venue.
Peter McIntyre, Executive Director of Economy & Place at Sunderland City Council, said, “The arena will be a fantastic addition to Sheepfolds, which is transforming thanks to developments like the Stables and the new Housing Innovation & Construction Skills Academy, and with much more to come.
British Esports has released new images and a fly-through video to give an idea of the finished venue. Inside, the arena will include a main stage with seating for 200 people and space for 400 standing guests. It will also feature a large 17-metre LED screen, full 5G connectivity and dedicated areas for broadcasting, content creation and editing.
Other facilities include retail and hospitality spaces, performance rooms, a lounge and bar area for up to 350 people, and an arcade zone. Outside, there will be a secure 550 sq.m activation space and a private car park covering 2,000 sq.m.
Much like the British Arena investment, Central Coast Studios Pty Ltd, a private Australian company, is also planning a $260 million production hub on the New South Wales Central Coast that will integrate film production, video game development, and esports within a single location.
