In exciting news for Call of Duty fans, Paramount Pictures has officially announced that American director Peter Berg, known for his popular movies like Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and Patriots Day, is teaming up with Activision to direct a live-action Call of Duty movie.
The announcement was shared on Paramount Pictures’ official Instagram handle, which also confirmed that the script will be co-written and produced by Taylor Sheridan. Right now, we don’t know the cast, release date, or exact story. However, insiders suggest that it could take place in a modern-day setting, similar to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. That would mean realistic action, modern gear, and lots of breathtaking moments.

According to a report by Deadline, this project is moving forward after years of failed attempts. In fact, at one point, even Steven Spielberg was interested but walked away due to creative differences.
The movie could also be a huge win for the Call of Duty esports scene, as a report suggests that video game movies often boost player numbers by 48%. A larger player pool means more aspiring pros, bigger amateur tournaments, and higher retention in ranked play, which are the core feeders for the CDL.
In other words, a new Call of Duty movie will eventually lead to more esports activity and higher viewership for the major tournaments. This added attention can attract more sponsors and funding to further stabilize leagues like the CDL, which has recently shattered its all-time peak viewership record.
If the movie hits big like Netflix’s Arcane did for League of Legends, Call of Duty could become one of the biggest names in both movies and esports, too.
