Formula 1 has announced that the 2026 F1 Sim Racing World Championship will officially kick off at DreamHack Birmingham on 27-29 March. The launch integrates the pinnacle of virtual motorsport into the festival’s $1.7 million competitive ecosystem, marking a strategic effort by F1 to reach audiences outside the traditional Grand Prix calendar.

The Birmingham event will host the first three rounds of a 12-round season, where nine official F1 teams—including Ferrari, Mercedes-AMG, and Red Bull Racing—will compete for a share of a $750,000 total prize pool. Attendees at DreamHack will have access to a dedicated F1 Sim Racing Fanzone, allowing for direct interaction with professional drivers and high-spec simulators.

While the season begins in front of a live festival crowd, the remaining nine rounds will transition to a permanent new home: a multi-purpose studio facility at F1’s Media and Technology Centre in Biggin Hill, England. The official release by Formula 1 states the structure has seen significant investment to create an optimal performance environment for sim racers, effectively placing the esports championship at the heart of F1’s global broadcast operations.

Emily Prazer, Chief Commercial Officer of Formula 1, emphasized the importance of the venue: “Our investment in a purpose-built sim racing facility at the Media and Technology Centre reinforces our long-term commitment to F1 Sim Racing and provides a permanent home for the Championship’s future growth.”

For DreamHack, part of the ESL FACEIT Group (EFG) portfolio, the addition of F1 Sim Racing solidifies Birmingham as a premier destination for esports in March. The event already boasts headline tournaments for Dota 2 ($1M prize pool) and the Call of Duty League ($365k). The integration follows a broader trend of “lifestyle” gaming festivals serving as the launchpads for professional sports leagues.

Niccolo Maisto, CEO of EFG, described the partnership as a “massive collision of worlds,” noting that it merges the “absolute pinnacle of motorsport with the raw, authentic energy of the UK gaming community.”
