The Vietnam Sports Department and Vietnam Multimedia Communications Corporation (VTC), a major state-owned corporation in Vietnam, have officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Hanoi to develop esports in Vietnam from 2026 to 2030.

According to the agreement, the Vietnam Sports Department, VTC and the Vietnam Recreational and Electronic Sports Association (VIRESA) will work together to build a sustainable esports ecosystem connected to international integration and creative economy goals.

The cooperation will focus on three main areas: building esports content that supports Vietnam’s cultural industry strategy, growing the sports economy through digital business models and sponsorship activities and creating a professional and transparent esports ecosystem based on international standards.

Speaking at the ceremony, Director General of the Vietnam Sports Department Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet explained that the Vietnam Sports Department will also study digital sports business models, commercial activities and sponsorship opportunities to help build a sustainable sports economy in the digital era.

VTC and the Vietnam Sports Department also plan to build official competition standards closer to international events such as the Southeast Asian Games and the Asian Games.

During the ceremony, the organisers also announced “The Grand Esports 2026,” a new national esports event series organised by the Vietnam Sports Department, VTC, and VIRESA. The series will have four main events. The first is the Vietnam Esports National Cup 2026 (VENC 2026), which will feature games like tactical first-person shooter Crossfire and VTC-published casual, rhythm-based mobile fashion and dancing game Au Mobile, with a total prize pool of about US$13,000.

The second event is the Esports Grand Championship 2026 (EGC 2026), in which teams from countries such as South Korea, Japan, China, Malaysia, and Thailand will compete in games including the casual rhythm and dancing MMO game Audition Online, the turn-based fantasy tactical role-playing mobile title Summoners War, and Au Mobile. All of the above-mentioned titles have built loyal fanbases in Vietnam, primarily due to active local tournaments in the country that also keep them popular year after year.

The third event is the Grand Esports Festival 2026. It will include talks about esports careers, tourism activities, and cosplay events. The final event, Grand Esports Awards 2026, will recognise people and organisations that have helped grow Vietnam’s esports industry.

Vietnam has already proven it can host major esports tournaments. In November 2025, Esports Championships Asia (ECA 2025) made its debut in Vietnam, with Can Tho City welcoming players from all over Asia. The country also held the League of Legends Championship Pacific (LCP) Finals Weekend last year, a league that combines teams from Vietnam, Japan, Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau, and Oceania into one Asia-Pacific showdown.
