Esports Insider (ESI), after nearly a decade as a cornerstone of professional esports business and consumer journalism, has effectively collapsed following a devastating manual penalty from Google. The technical sanction, which has scrubbed the site’s visibility from search results, led parent company ClickOut Media to immediately begin redundancy proceedings for its full time staff and freelance team.
The downfall follows the 2025 acquisition of ESI from Sport Global by ClickOut. While the ESI editorial team continued to produce high-calibre journalism and analysis, reports suggest the new parent company’s broader strategy prioritised aggressive betting and gambling SEO tactics and third-party affiliate hosting that ultimately put the domain’s health at risk.
This seemingly came to a head in early March 2026. While the industry speculated on the cause of ESI’s sudden disappearance from Google, a source close to the situation confirmed to The Esports Radar the grim reality: The website was hit with a manual penalty from Google and the owners allegedly do not plan on addressing it, resulting in staff writers and freelancers being let go.
A manual penalty is the most severe action Google can take, typically reserved for sites found to be in flagrant violation of its webmaster guidelines. As discussed by analysts, the “Site Reputation Abuse” policy—often triggered when authoritative domains host tangentially related affiliate content to manipulate rankings—is the most likely culprit.
The scale of the layoffs was made public through a statement from long-time Editor Tom Daniels, who had been with the publication for over five years. Daniels confirmed he is among those put “at risk of redundancy”.
“It’s a shame to see Esports Insider seemingly close its doors,” Daniels wrote. “I’m incredibly proud of what we managed to build as a team. Firstly, from being a B2B esports media powerhouse that was a standard-bearer for esports business coverage to becoming a B2C coverage website that informed esports fanatics on the latest happenings.”
Launched in London in 2016 by Sport Global Group (best known for its flagship brand SBC), with Sam Cooke, now Co-Founder and CEO at The Esports Radar’s owner The Insights Group. As Co-Founder at ESI, Cooke was first Editor before becoming Managing Director as ESI scaled as one of the pioneers in the “B2B” (Business-to-Business) esports space. It provided a professional lens on sponsorship deals, investments, and the legalities of the burgeoning industry. Beyond the screen, ESI became known for hosting premier conferences in London, New York, and Singapore, bridging the gap between business and competitive gaming.
Beyond the collapse of ESI, ClickOut Media has been at the centre of a broader industry-wide controversy involving what critics call the “vandalism” of legacy gaming brands. Since 2024, the company has reportedly acquired respected outlets such as Esports News UK, Esports.net, The Escapist, VideoGamer, Adventure Gamers, and GamesHub, only to face accusations of gutting their editorial teams and replacing them with “AI Editors” and fake author profiles.
The Esports Radar reached out to ClickOut Media for a statement on the case, but did not receive an answer by the time of publication of this article. We will update the story as a statement or other relevant facts come to light.
