The 2025 Esports World Cup (EWC) officially begins today, 7 July, in Riyadh, bringing together fans, athletes, and industry professionals from around the globe. Whether you’re here to watch the matches live or to make business connections during the world’s largest esports event, there are a few things you should know to make the most of your visit to the Saudi capital.

See below tips shared by the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) itself in a media guide for coverage arriving in Saudi Arabia. The Esports Radar is already in the city, and therefore added details based on personal experience:

The City
Riyadh blends ancient history with rapid modern development. Once a trading post known as Hajr, its transformation into today’s metropolis began in 1902. You possibly will see in the travel from the airport to your hotel that this transformation is still underway.

The city is now home to major commercial centres, cultural heritage sites, and a growing lineup of international entertainment events—including, for the second consecutive year, the Esports World Cup.

By the way, prepare for a car trip for such a trip after landing in Riyadh. Finding an Uber, Careem, or Taxi is really easy, but the airport is considerably distant from the city centre. You may spend from 40 minutes to one hour on the road. Take note of this and do not miss your flight back home after the event.

Climate
Be prepared: Riyadh in July is hot. Daytime temperatures typically range from 38°C to 44°C, with the possibility of occasional evening thunderstorms offering some relief. Humidity may also be present.

Staying hydrated is essential, as is using sunscreen and moisturiser to combat the dry climate. The hotel where The Esports Radar is staying in offers bottled water for free, but it is unclear if that is a pattern. Many venues are air-conditioned, but outdoor travel requires extra care in the summer heat.

Currency & Costs
The local currency is the Saudi Riyal (SAR). At current rates, 1 SAR equals approximately £0.21 or $0.27. Major credit and debit cards are widely accepted, and cash can be withdrawn from ATMs, though fees may apply.

Accommodation and utility
Riyadh offers a broad range of accommodation options, from high-end luxury hotels to more affordable business-class alternatives, all generally catering to international standards. Availability may be limited during peak EWC days, so advance booking is advisable.

Electrical sockets are UK-compatible (three-pronged), meaning UK visitors won’t need plug adapters.

Entry Requirements
Visitors must obtain an e-visa prior to arrival, which can be secured through the Visit Saudi website. Processing usually takes under two business days. Visa fees vary depending on nationality, typically falling between SAR 340 and SAR 494 (approximately $90.50–$131).

In The Esports Radar’s experience, the visa was issued just a few minutes after online application and payment for an European (Italy) passport. Arriving in Riyadh there weren’t any problems whatsoever, as showing the visa on the phone screen was sufficient.

Cultural Norms
Friday from 12–2pm is reserved for Salatul-Jumu’ah, the weekly community prayer. During this time, many businesses and shops may close temporarily.

Alcohol and drugs are strictly prohibited in the Kingdom. Tobacco and vaping products, however, are allowed.

Emergency Services
Key emergency contacts include:Police: 999
Fire: 998
Ambulance: 997
Car Accidents: 993
Unified Emergency Number: 911

The Esports Radar will be reporting daily from Riyadh throughout the tournament. Stay tuned for updates, highlights, and insider tips from the heart of the action.
