American Rocket League content creator Jared “SunlessKhan” Zook has announced the creation of the Rocket League Battle Series (RLBS), a new invite-only, franchised 2v2 competition designed with a strong focus on entertainment.
The RLBS will condense its entire season — including regular fixtures, playoffs and a championship match — into a single weekend. The matches will then be compiled into one long-form YouTube video showcasing the league’s gameplay and offbeat moments.
Eight themed franchises will compete in the inaugural edition: Clowns, Generals, Team of Bronzes, Painkillers, Goblins, Philosophers, Divorced Dads, and Natural Disasters. Each franchise will have two player slots, with participants either assigned or selecting a character to represent. Character names range from comedic to eccentric, with examples such as “Dirty Girt” and “Uglug the Wicked.”
While designed as a content-driven event, the competition aims to feature high-level play. Eligibility is restricted to players ranked at or near Supersonic Legend in 1v1, 2v2 or 3v3 — or those who have reached the rank in the past. Notable content creators, professional players, former pros, and skilled freestylers are being targeted for participation.
The league’s format features short three-minute matches, with 14 games scheduled on Friday, another 14 on Saturday, and the playoffs and final taking place on Sunday. Players will remain anonymous in-game, without voice communication, but are encouraged to use in-game chat to stay in character — with trash talk actively encouraged.
The announcement comes shortly after Rocket League introduced a game update adding new administrative tools for private match hosts. The patch allows organisers to pause games, adjust remaining time and score, and restart play from kickoff, potentially streamlining match management for competitive events such as the RLBS.
SunlessKhan describes the RLBS as combining competitive Rocket League with the theatrical flair of entertainment-focused sports teams such as the Harlem Globetrotters. The inaugural season’s weekend schedule will be determined based on player availability. No business partners for the tournament had been announced at the time of this publication.
