The Global Esports Federation (GEF) has announced the launch of its Innovation & Research Centre (IRC) in Athens, Greece, in partnership with Socialinnov, a non-profit organisation focused on digital empowerment and social entrepreneurship.
The initiative is part of the GEF’s plan for a wider network of IRCs, designed to act as collaborative spaces that link technology, creativity and innovation with education, wellness and opportunities across esports and related industries. The Athens hub will anchor the network, aiming to strengthen local ecosystems and promote cooperation across regions.
Thanos Karagrounas, Chief Impact Officer at the GEF, described the launch as “a milestone in the GEF’s journey to shape an inclusive and impactful future for esports.” He added: “By combining Socialinnov’s deep expertise in digital empowerment with the GEF’s international network, we will unlock new opportunities for innovation, education, and investment – with people at the centre of everything we do.”
Stella Psarrou, Director of Socialinnov, highlighted the impact aimed by the partnership, saying: “This collaboration reflects our mission to empower individuals and communities with the skills and tools needed to thrive in the digital age. Together, we will cultivate new pathways for youth, educators, and entrepreneurs to engage with technology, esports, and innovation on a global scale.”
According to a press release, the Athens IRC objective is to leverage Greece’s expanding digital ecosystem and Socialinnov’s experience in education, youth empowerment and small and medium-sized enterprises support. According to the GEF, it will serve as a platform to develop strategies and programmes aimed at responsible gaming, holistic wellness, and sustainable career pathways in esports and beyond.
