Prince William, the Prince of Wales, has taken part in a competitive gaming fixture at the SEF Arena in Saudi Arabia, facing HRH Prince Faisal, Chairman of the Saudi Esports Federation, in a Team UK vs Team Saudi Rocket League match that concluded with a 2-0 victory for the home side.

The event saw the Prince of Wales enter the arena floor to compete following his attendance at the Academy, where he met young Saudis undertaking training programmes. The match itself, though ceremonial in nature, was framed by those involved as emblematic of esports’ capacity to facilitate international engagement outside traditional sporting or political channels.

The visit, which forms part of a three-day tour of the Kingdom, included a tour of the SEF Academy and interactions with students participating in esports classes and workshops. Gaming & Esports Director at VANGUARD, Alex McBride, was present to support the engagement, noting signals of growing diplomatic and cultural weight of esports within Saudi Arabia’s diversification strategy.

Global Esports Industry Week (GEIW) will return in 2026 with a bigger and bolder edition, taking place across 18–21 June in Cologne, Germany, alongside IEM Cologne. The schedule and details about ticket sales are available in this link.

McBride, speaking on social media, said the visit “highlights how important esports is to the Kingdom, as well as the power and reach of esports globally.”

The SEF Arena constitute key infrastructure assets for the Saudi Esports Federation, which has overseen a marked expansion of the Kingdom’s competitive gaming ecosystem in recent years. This has included hosting tournaments and forging partnerships with global rights-holders such as FIFA for the FIFAe Finals, efforts widely interpreted as aligning with the country’s Vision 2030 economic reform agenda.

While royal attendance at sporting events is not without precedent, direct participation by a senior UK royal in an esports contest while on an official visit represents an unusual convergence of traditional statecraft and the digital domain. The involvement of Prince Faisal, who leads the Kingdom’s esports federation, further cements the sector’s positioning as a matter of strategic interest at the highest levels of Saudi governance.
