Lenovo has made a major investment in the esports program at North Carolina State University. The primary goal of this deal is to help the university grow its competitive gaming activities and digital media programs.

As part of the agreement, two important places on campus will carry Lenovo’s name. One is a brand-new esports arena that is still being built, and the other is an existing gaming lab in Hunt Library.

The new arena will be called the Lenovo Esports Arena, a large 5,000-square-foot space built in Mann Hall and is expected to open in 2027. It will have room for 400 spectators and over 100 high-performance gaming setups.

The state of North Carolina is also supporting the project by handing over $12 million. The arena will not only be used for competitions but also for classes, research, and student activities.

When it comes to Lenovo, the company is providing funding for staff, equipment, and daily operations, and it will also build a large custom server and supply gaming hardware. This is similar to how a tech company might set up IT infrastructure in an office to keep everything running smoothly.

The gaming lab in Hunt Library, which opened in January 2024, will now be called the Lenovo Esports and Gaming Lab. The university has agreed to a 10-year deal to name these spaces after Lenovo. This shows a long-term partnership between the company and the university, not just a short-term sponsorship.

Ryan McCurdy, Senior Vice President and President, Lenovo North America, said, “Lenovo and NC State have a long-standing partnership centered on innovation and preparing students for their future. We’re excited to extend that relationship and help provide these world-class esports spaces on campus that enhance the student experience.”

Chancellor Kevin Howell said, “NC State has always been a leader in innovative fields that drive economic and workforce development, and esports and the digital economy are among the latest examples.”

The official announcement also states that this investment is the biggest ever made in NC State’s esports program and also the largest corporate donation received by the university’s libraries.

NC State’s esports program has been growing quickly. Its Esports Club, started in 2018, competes in popular games like Counter-Strike 2,VALORANT, and League of Legends. The new arena is expected to help the program grow even more. It will also support academic courses in areas like engineering, design, and computer science.

We’ve been seeing more and more esports organisations and governments invest in these large, multi-use arenas. The British Esports Federation recently unveiled a first look of its new entertainment and esports venue known as the British Arena which is opening in summer 2026. And in the Maldives, President Mohamed Muizzu confirmed they’re starting construction on a new esports arena in Malé later in 2026.
