The Brazilian Federal Government has appointed Cadu Albuquerque as the country’s new National Director of Esports under the Ministry of Sport.
The appointment was officially published in the Official Gazette of the Union in which it’s mentioned that Albuquerque will now lead the esports Directorate, which is part of the National Secretariat for Sports Betting and Economic Development of Sport, a key division within the Ministry of Sport.
With the appointment, Albuquerque takes over the highest public position related to esports in Brazil. His main responsibility will be to help create public policies and governance structures for the growth of the country’s competitive gaming ecosystem.
The move comes nearly a month after the removal of former director Márcio Zuba de Oliva, who served in the role from October 2024 to April 2026.
Albuquerque is already a well-known name in Brazilian esports. Before assuming his new role, Albuquerque served as president of the Rio de Janeiro State Federation of Electronic Sports (FERJEE), where Bárbara Corrêa now serves as interim president.
During his time leading FERJEE, the federation focused on organising and supporting national and international esports tournaments. It also worked on promoting women’s esports through projects such as the Rainhas do Clutch circuit, while supporting grassroots and LAN events for young players.
FERJEE also built partnerships with both government bodies and private companies under Albuquerque’s leadership. One of Albuquerque’s biggest achievements was helping secure an agreement between the Rio de Janeiro State Government and ESL FACEIT Group for the return of IEM Rio 2026, one of the biggest Counter-Strike tournaments in the world.
He helped grow the esports ecosystem in Rio de Janeiro by bringing Rainhas do Clutch 2026, which is the first international version of the Counter-Strike 2 “Queens of Clutch” tournament.
