It’s not every day you see an esports org pull back the curtain, especially when they weren’t directly requested to do so. The Liquid Citadel story is one of those “when one door closes, kick another one open” moments that actually worked out for everyone involved.
The organisation spontaneously shared a breakdown of how this heavyweight partnership for Marvel Rivals Ignite 2026 came to life.
Most teams hit a wall and take a “wait and see” approach. Citadel did the opposite. Even after their initial application for NetEase‘s partner program was denied, they didn’t pause. Instead, they moved aggressively to lock down a top-tier roster during the offseason. The strategy worked: With the roster secured but the need for league revenue sharing still on the table, Citadel started knocking on the doors of confirmed partner teams.
While they reached out to several, Team Liquid didn’t just answer—they jumped at the chance. Within 48 hours, they had the vision, the branding, and the infrastructure aligned to create Liquid Citadel.

The result is a functional joint venture where both sides play to their strengths. Citadel’s role includes handling the competitive and marketing operations. This is because Citadel already has roots in the Marvel Rivals ecosystem, so they keep the keys to the car when it comes to gameday coverage and team identity.
Liquid is responsible for providing the “world-class infrastructure.” This means financial backing, administrative support, and the massive reach of the Team Liquid brand to amplify everything the players do.
@CitadelCTG will function as the home base for gameday hype and content, while @TeamLiquid acts as the powerhouse support beam. “The Liquid Citadel partnership enables us to make a larger impact in Marvel Rivals than either of us would be able to by ourselves,” said Stuart Ewen, Associate Director of Athletics at Team Liquid.
“We are proud to call Team Liquid a partner… This enables us to offer our team the best support in the entire ecosystem,” stated Xavier Vaillancourt, General Manager at Citadel Gaming.
The partnership has what it takes to be a win-win where a veteran org provides the backbone while a rising specialist enters with its expertise. If the two parts succeed in finding harmony within the alliance, the whole Marvel Rivals ecosystem itself can benefit by the title-specific knowledge applied to a global esports-wide powerhouse stronghold.
