The National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) and Voice of Intercollegiate Esports (VOICE) have announced a major new partnership to bring structure and consistency to the college esports scene. The two organisations revealed the Standards Initiative on October 23, with a primary objective of unifying collegiate programs across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
The partnership comes at a time when college esports is expanding rapidly but struggling with uneven rules, program quality, and scattered data. These gaps have made it difficult for schools to recruit talent and secure funding. Therefore, NACE will bring its experience in college-level governance and its large membership, while VOICE will provide research-based advocacy to help build a strong and lasting system.

Riley Long, Executive Director at NACE Esports, said in an official statement, “We’re excited to team up with Voice of Intercollegiate Esports to support this initiative. More to come on our formal involvement, but I want to highlight that I believe this is a critical step forward that will enable us to combat the fragmentation of our space.”
When it comes to the Standards Initiative, it’s a four-part framework that will roll out gradually and fully launch by fall 2026. Its key components are the Esports Program Rubric, Program Finder, Industry Database and Growth Report.
These tools are especially timely, as NACE membership statistics and reporting data indicates programs can launch for under $41,000 on average, which means starting a collegiate esports program doesn’t have to break the bank. However, without solid benchmarks, many administrators hesitate to invest. The Standards Initiative directly tackles this hesitation by integrating actionable benchmarks into its framework to guide cost-effective implementations.
