Esports Wales has entered into a partnership with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) to launch the Rugby 25 Student Championships, a new esports initiative aimed at schools and colleges across Wales.
The competition will be played on Rugby 25, published by Nacon, and is designed to introduce students to structured competitive gaming. According to Esports Wales, the programme seeks to promote “digital engagement, teamwork, and inclusion” while connecting esports to the long-standing traditions of Welsh rugby.
The organisers highlighted the cultural significance of the collaboration, framing it as a step towards combining two central elements of Welsh identity — rugby and gaming. “Together, we’re showing that #CymruPlaysAsOne — whether on the pitch or in the virtual arena,” the announcement stated.
Details on registration and the tournament structure are expected to be released in the coming weeks. Esports Wales has also invited educators and esports enthusiasts to take part in shaping the event, which is intended to contribute to youth development and innovation within the Welsh esports ecosystem.
