ESL FACEIT Group (EFG) has revealed initial format and structural details for the return of the Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) to Brazil, scheduled to take place from May 3-9, 2027.
Operating as a tier-one stop within the broader ESL Pro Tour (EPT) circuit, the CS2 tournament features a total financial allocation of $1,000,000. This pool is split between direct team prize money ($300,000 cumulative) and a designated “Club Reward” matrix ($700,000 cumulative), marking the fourth confirmed location on the organiser’s disclosed 2027 competitive calendar which includes IEM Krakow and the ESL Pro League in Saudi Arabia.

While the specific host city for the 2027 edition has not been formally announced, expectations point to a return to Rio de Janeiro. The city has established a consistent operational history with the Intel Extreme Masters circuit, having hosted the IEM Rio Major in 2022, followed by successive standalone IEM Rio events in 2023, 2024, and 2026. This recurring presence aligns with municipal policy; the City of Rio de Janeiro operates a dedicated Games and Esports department under the leadership of Chandy Teixeira, deliberately positioning major international gaming tournaments as central pillars of the municipality’s regional economic and cultural development strategy.
In its official structural update, ESL noted that the Brazilian tournament forms a key part of the more than $11,450,000 allocated for competing organisations and players across the entire 2027 ESL Pro Tour ecosystem. The organiser confirmed that standard invite exceptions will remain strictly enforced, meaning any teams or individual players carrying active competitive bans from ESL, FACEIT, or the Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) will be ineligible for selection regardless of their placement on the regional or global Valve Standings (VRS) lists.
The competition will feature a 16-team live LAN environment. Teams will be split into two double-elimination groups of eight, with four teams from each group advancing to an eight-team arena playoff stage. The playoff schedule spans three days: four quarter-finals on Friday, two semi-finals on Saturday, and a newly integrated third-place decider match preceding the Grand Final on Sunday. Invitations will be determined by the February 2027 VRS, alongside regional closed qualifiers executed on South American and European servers.
Notably, the event will factor into a revised 2027 Annual Club Incentive calculation, which will utilise the combined average concurrent viewership across the entire tournament—including playoffs—to determine institutional points distribution.
