ESL FACEIT Group has officially announced that Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Cologne will return to Germany in 2027, with 24 Counter-Strike 2 teams set to compete from August 4 to 15.
The tournament will offer a total prize pool of $1.25 million, with teams also competing for the IEM Cologne championship trophy and points toward the ESL Grand Slam, a series that rewards teams for strong results across major ESL Counter-Strike events.
ESL also highlighted that the 2027 event will be the largest IEM Cologne edition to date, as for the first time outside of a Counter-Strike Major, the tournament’s playoffs will take place across four days at Cologne’s LANXESS arena, from August 12 to 15.
Eight teams will qualify for the playoffs and compete in front of a live audience. Organisers also plan to use a 360-degree stage for the playoff matches, meaning the playing area will be surrounded by spectators rather than positioned at one end of the arena.
Marc Winther, Director Esports Counter-Strike 2 at ESL FACEIT Group, said, “What happened in Cologne this year was remarkable, and it once again showed what makes IEM Cologne so special. It brings together the world’s best teams, fans from across the globe, an atmosphere unlike almost anywhere else in Counter-Strike, and a history that has made this tournament one of the game’s most iconic events. With four days of Playoffs at the LANXESS arena and the 360-degree stage design, we have an opportunity to deliver our most ambitious edition yet while staying true to what has made IEM Cologne such an important part of esports history for more than a decade.”
The announcement comes after a record-breaking 2026 edition of IEM Cologne. The tournament hosted a Counter-Strike Major for the first time in 10 years, bringing the game’s biggest teams back to the German city for one of its most important events.
According to the figures provided by the organisers, the tournament recorded more than 100 million hours watched and reached a peak audience of 2.75 million viewers. The organisers said this made it the most-watched Counter-Strike tournament on record. The 2027 event will therefore return to Cologne without major status but with an expanded arena playoff format.
Tickets for IEM Cologne 2027 will first be available through a pre-sale beginning October 13 at 15:00 CEST. The first wave of general ticket sales will follow on October 15 at 15:00 CEST. Further information about the tournament, including additional event details, is expected to be announced later.
