The Malaysia Esports Federation (MESF) and the Singapore Esports Association (SGEA) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a bilateral alliance focused on talent development and cross-border mobility. The agreement, formalised during the launch of MOONTON Games’ MPL Malaysia Season 17, signals a strategic shift towards regional integration in Southeast Asian esports.

The MOU aims to open professional pathways for players across both nations, specifically facilitating the “Expansion Team” initiative. This allows Singapore-based organisations—including the likes of Team Flash—to compete directly in the Malaysian league.

According to official communications issued by MOONTON Games after the MPL Malaysia kickoff, the alliance is a key component of Malaysia’s broader national ambition, spearheaded by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), to transform the country into a global esports powerhouse by 2030. For MOONTON, MESF’s move positions the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) ecosystem as a mature, professionalised industry capable of driving the digital economy.

Global Esports Industry Week (GEIW) will return in 2026 with a bigger and bolder edition, taking place across 18–21 June in Cologne, Germany, alongside IEM Cologne. The schedule and details about ticket sales are available in this link.

Muhammad Naim Al Amin, President of MESF, stated: “This MOU reflects a shared commitment between Malaysia and Singapore to deepen cooperation in esports development. It is a structural step that strengthens MPL Malaysia’s regional foundation while creating meaningful opportunities for talent across both countries. We are positioning Malaysia as a regional esports hub.”

Kelvin Tan, Secretary General of SGEA, also commented on the development: “The collaboration with MESF demonstrates how regional partnership strengthens the entire esports ecosystem. By providing Singaporean players access to one of Southeast Asia’s most competitive leagues, we are paving sustainable pathways for talent development.”

Besides the MoU signing, MOONTON also announced an aggressive push into mainstream visibility of MPL Malaysia through high-tier media deals. MOONTON Games has secured Malaysia’s largest streaming platform Tonton as the Official Streaming Partner and Media Prima, the country’s largest integrated media group, as the Official Content Partner. The strategy aims to move esports from the digital sidelines into the centre of Malaysian culture, as noted by Fikri Rizal Mahruddin, General Manager at Media Prima.

Sustainability is also being addressed at the grassroots level through the expansion of the Guru Juara MOONTON Masterclasses. Having successfully piloted in the state of Selangor, the programme will now launch in Kuala Lumpur, training educators to guide students in responsible gaming and digital literacy. Malaysia already considers MLBB as a tool for youth and education development.

“We are making an unprecedented commitment to build a professional and stable ecosystem where our players and teams can thrive on a global stage. Our vision is to establish esports as a national game, woven into the very fabric of Malaysian culture,” said Krystal Tan, Head of Business Development at MOONTON Games.
