Tournament operator ESL FACEIT Group (EFG) has announced that its flagship Dota 2 circuit will head to Bavaria for ESL One Munich 2027. Scheduled to take place from 4 to 11 April 2027, the tournament will gather 16 international teams to compete for a $1m prize pool, representing the largest single financial purse of the current ESL Pro Tour (EPT) season.
The live arena portion of the event, running from 9 to 11 April, will be hosted at BMW Park in Munich. The venue features an interactive glass LED flooring system designed for live audience visualisations and real-time match data displays.

The arrival of the tournament has received direct public support from Bavarian State Minister for Digital Affairs Dr. Fabian Mehring and Dr. Christian Scharpf, Head of Munich’s Department of Labour and Economic Development, who framed the hosting agreement as part of Bavaria’s broader state strategy to attract international tech and digital entertainment investments.
“Esports is so much more than gaming. It’s about teamwork, strategy, split-second decisions and the passion to push your limits. It brings people together across borders, languages and cultures – united by the thrill of competition and the love of the game. As Germany’s leading games hub, Bavaria is proud to be part of this incredible community. We’re investing in the future of gaming, supporting esports clubs and major events, and creating a place where talent, technology and passion come together,” stated Mehring in a press release.
“Munich brings together everything a premier gaming event needs: a thriving tech hub home to leading global corporations, and a sports venue with a rich and storied history. It is the ideal place for esports to bridge both worlds. We look forward to writing a new chapter in our modern sporting city and to welcoming passionate esports fans,” Scharpf added.
“BMW Park gives us the opportunity to explore new ways of bringing Dota 2 to life through our event production, while continuing to deliver the level of competition and live experience that fans expect from ESL One. Following a fantastic ESL One Birmingham earlier this year, we’re looking forward to building on that momentum and welcome the community to Munich in 2027,” said Tobias Fjellander, Senior Product Manager, Dota 2 at ESL FACEIT Group.
Positioned as the primary midseason invitational, ESL One Munich serves as a crucial qualification milestone within the EPT ecosystem, directly influencing team seeding and invitations for the annual Esports World Cup (EWC) in Riyadh. EFG’s commitment reflects ongoing competition among major tournament operators following Valve’s dissolution of the regional Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) in September 2023, with Romanian rival PGL similarly pledging $13m in Dota 2 prize pools from 2025 through 2028.
However, the high-stakes circuit highlights divergence between tournament operator funding and team-side financial sustainability. Despite significant prize pools at tier-one events, Norwegian organisation HEROIC completely disbanded its Dota 2 roster earlier this year due to financial pressures, despite achieving strong competitive results in South America.
