PlayVS, the scholastic and collegiate esports platform, has completed a reorganisation backed by new financing and a newly formed executive leadership team, the company announced. Jonathan Boswell has been named Chief Executive Officer, alongside Juanita Russell as Chief Financial Officer and Charles O’Donnell as Chief Revenue Officer.

The restructuring follows a challenging 2026 for PlayVS, which forced the company to streamline operations and cut costs while pursuing new capital. PlayVS stated it is now fully funded and reorganised, with plans to continue investing in its platform, curriculum, and partnerships from middle school through college. The platform is backed by Elysian Park Ventures, led by Co-Founder and Managing Partner Cole Van Nice.

As part of the changes, PlayVS has restored competition fees to its scholastic programmes, reversing a no-cost model the company said proved unsustainable for maintaining reliable technology, league operations and customer support. PlayVS told The Esports Radar the shift is better characterised as a move toward a holistic revenue model rather than a subscription-focused one, drawing on competition fees, strategic partnerships (including Sony INZONE, ZENNI Optical and Palmer Hamilton), its curriculum business Gaming Concepts, and its recruiting business, rather than relying primarily on sponsorship and acquisitions as under prior leadership.

The company said that earlier approach did not generate sufficient long-term revenue to sustain the business. PlayVS underwent a significant workforce reduction over the course of 2026 as part of its cost-cutting response, and has since begun rehiring as the new model stabilises. The company did not share specific figures on the scale of the reduction or subsequent rehiring.

On partner retention through the transition, PlayVS said it did not lose a single state association partner during the shift to the new fee model, pointing to a recent partner renewal announcement confirming its full slate of NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations)-affiliated state partners have renewed under the new terms.

The company also confirmed to The Esports Radar that it has paused its Madden NFL Youth Championship initiative as part of the broader restructuring, while separate initiatives with the Army National Guard and the NHL remain ongoing.

Boswell steps into the CEO role after nearly seven years at PlayVS, most recently as Chief Technology Officer since January 2025, having previously led the company’s engineering, product and operations teams. He has twenty-three years of experience and three prior executive exits, including as CTO of education technology company ArborBridge, where he built its online SAT and ACT tutoring platform and oversaw its acquisition of College Planner Pro ahead of ArborBridge’s own acquisition in 2021.

Russell joined PlayVS as CFO in January 2026 and will continue overseeing accounting, financial operations, treasury management and investor relations, bringing more than twenty-five years of financial and operational experience. She previously served as CFO of Common Securitization Solutions, a joint venture between Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and as CFO of MERSCORP Holdings, where she led financial strategy through its acquisition by Intercontinental Exchange.

O’Donnell moves into the CRO role after serving as Head of Partnerships at PlayVS, which he joined in April 2025 through the company’s acquisition of Playfly Sports’ esports division, a business he had led since 2020. At PlayVS, he has worked on collegiate esports strategy and partnerships, including a rebrand of the collegiate business. His earlier career spans Fanalytical, Georgia Tech Athletics, the Philadelphia Flyers, and APA Talent and Literary Agency.

Looking ahead, PlayVS said its goal is to position the platform as more than a competition tool, connecting students’ interest in gaming to curriculum, college opportunities and career readiness pathways.
