Red Bull has announced the launch of Red Bull Coded Cleats, a new competition format that merges physical soccer with digital gameplay on EA SportsEA FC. Debuting in Dallas, Texas, on 5–6 June 2026, the event challenges teams to compete on a physical pitch and a games console simultaneously. The goal of the initiative is to approach traditional sports and gaming, creating a unified match format where skills in both arenas determine the final score.

The hybrid competition features teams of six players. During the match, four players compete in a small-pitch soccer game while two teammates play EA FC on consoles. Both segments operate under a single, unified score and game clock. At half-time, the console players must swap with two teammates from the pitch, ensuring participants engage in both the physical and digital elements of the game.

“Most of us that grew up playing soccer also put in time on the virtual pitch, so bringing those worlds together into one competition just makes sense,” said Mike LaBelle, Red Bull Athlete and FC professional player.

The initiative is part of a broader strategic shift toward “hybrid fandom” in 2026. This follows the recent launch of Red Bull XI, a social media channel dedicated to the intersection of football culture and gaming. The platform features collaborations with talent from Premier League clubs such as Leeds United and Aston Villa.

This trend is reflected elsewhere in the industry through high-profile professional crossovers. Recently, Team Liquid partnered with Sunderland AFC for the ePremier League, while Evil Geniuses joined Austin FC to enter the eMLS and EA FC Pro circuits. Furthermore, the ePremier League China has highlighted the role of mobile gaming in connecting Western football brands with Asian markets.

Similar integration is evident in the Kings League, the 7-a-side football league founded by former professional football player Gerard Piqué. The league incorporates gaming elements into its matches and utilises streaming strategies common in esports. It currently features teams fielded by major esports organisations, including G2 in Germany and paiN Gaming in Brazil.
