The Esports Research Network (ERN) has announced that its annual flagship event, the Esports Research Network Conference (ERNC) 2026, will be hosted by the University of Tsukuba in Japan from 15 to 17 September 2026.

Organised in collaboration with the Entertainment and Gaming Research Association (EGRA) and GAKU, the three-day international summit aims to provide a premier platform for high-level dialogue between global academic researchers, policymakers, and major interactive entertainment executives.

The core objective of this year’s convening is to evaluate how regional gaming culture, market development, and institutional frameworks intersect under the central theme: “Bridging Gaming Heritage and Esports Futures: Transformations, Traditions, and Tomorrow.”

The conference will utilise the University of Tsukuba’s 30th Anniversary Hall (Daigaku Kaikan) as its main operational hub, with networking and corporate catering anchored at the University Hall Restaurant Tsukuba Demi. The event’s schedule focuses heavily on the distinct structural development of the Asian games ecosystem, exploring how Japan’s legacy console culture, arcade heritage, and publisher involvement are shaping modern community pathways and talent development.

To establish a multi-disciplinary lens across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, the programming will feature an opening day panel titled “How Publishers and Public Authorities Shape Japan’s Esports Scene,” bringing together stakeholders to examine critical areas such as digital labour, governance, player well-being, and evolving platform economies.

Commenting on the strategic selection of the location, Prof. Dr. Tobias Scholz, Founding Chairperson of the Esports Research Network, stated: “Japan has shaped how the world plays and competes, long before anyone called it esports. Bringing the ERN’s conference to Tsukuba is a milestone for our network, but above all it is an opportunity to learn: from Japan’s gaming ecosystem, its arcade heritage, and its grassroots communities.”

Prof. Dr. Tsubasa Shinohara, Conference Chair and Assistant Professor at the University of Tsukuba, added that the assembly’s multi-disciplinary focus aims to “deep-dive into complex critical areas such as digital labor, governance, player well-being, and evolving platform economies, allowing us to co-author a more thorough global playbook for the future of competitive play.”

Ms Sayo Okamoto, ERNC Business Organising Team and CEO of GAKU, also commented on the event: “Bringing the ERNC to Japan for the very first time makes perfect sense. As the birthplace and home of so many global game publishing powerhouses, Japan offers an unparalleled backdrop for this summit. We hope this historic location will encourage a highly productive confluence of academic dialogue between publishers and academia, ultimately elevating the entire industry and empowering all participants with profound, newfound perspectives on where competitive gaming is headed.”

The scheduling of the ERNC 2026 anchors a outstanding month for the interactive entertainment landscape in Japan, positioning the conference as an academic and strategic prelude to the region’s largest industry milestones: Immediately following the conclusion of the Tsukuba event, the global esports community will converge on Makuhari Messe for the Tokyo Game Show 2026 (TGS), running from 17 to 21 September, which will spotlight major domestic publisher showcases. This momentum builds directly into the kickoff of the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, where esports will take center stage as an official, full-medal discipline at the Aichi Sky Expo from 23 September to 2 October.

Participant registration for the conference, which features a high-profile speaker line-up from powerhouses like SEGA, KONAMI, Bandai Namco, and the Japan Esports Association, officially closes on 1 September 2026 at the event’s website.
